About Me

Barbara grew up in Mission, Kansas, a suburb of Kansas City, where she was born. This area of Kansas was the departure point for the Santa Fe and Overland Trails to California and Oregon.

After moving to California, her collection expanded beyond arrowheads, bowls and pre-Columbian artifacts to building an extensive library on Indian art and a modest collection of pottery, blankets and rugs. The MOKI collection highlights the wonderful designs of the Southwest derived from pottery and petroglyphs.

Anasazi, Hohokam and Mimbres designs are primarily featured. Gourds are grown all over the world with a variety of shapes and sizes. They are part of the squash family and a few are edible. Since the Indians had many uses for the gourds as containers, drums, dippers, rattles and masks, it seemed appropriate to decorate the gourds with ancient designs.

Each gourd is hand selected. Careful preparation involves scrubbing, cutting, scraping and sanding. The designs are incised using a wood burning technique of outlining, shading and texturing. They are then dyed and polished giving them a leathery look. Some tops are wrapped with Southern California basket materials. A few are embellished with turquoise, beads, feathers and shells. Other gourds are cut in a stair-step effect of a Kiva with a design and ladder. Ornaments, masks and birdhouses are also part of the collection.

Gourds are signed by the artist as well as the name “MOKI” signifying the legendary “Little People” of the Anasazi.

About Me

Shirley and Jim are mulit-media artists living in the Kern River Valley.  Shirley creates hand-built clay sculptures, acrylic paintings, mosaics, recycled sculptures and wall art, pine needle baskets, jewelry, stained glass, computer graphics, artist trading cards, memory albums, greeting cards, ceramics, and just about anything that happens to inspire her.

Jim is a photographer, clay artist and sign designer.

Shirley's artistic mission is to create art from as many mediums as is possible.  She is thrilled by the prospect of creating designs from trash or a lump of clay or a pile of beads.  She is more prone to random designs than designs that need to be pre-measured or pre-drawn.  Once she begins to create a piece, it takes on a life of its own and she follows it through to fruition.  Her excitement in the creative process blocks out the outside world until each piece is complete.

About Me

My name is Jeanie Zebrak and I was born in NYC. From the time I was little I enjoyed art. I guess I got that from my dad who also enjoyed working with his hands. I never took art classes in school and never even thought about any kind of art till I was much older and living on my own. At that time I was into sewing and making my own clothes. From there I progressed into intricate embroidery on the clothes I made. As the years progressed I continued to make clothes for myself and my family. At some point my interests changed and I realized that I needed more art in my life and took some jewelry classes at the community college near me. I have to say I was hooked. I loved working with metals and stones. Fabricating was fascinating and lost wax casting was incredible. I did this for a number of years and then, things changed in my life and I found I was drawn to working with metals and semi- precious stone beads. Beadwork was the natural progression for me. There isn’t a day that goes by that I am not in my studio with my hands in my beads. I have been fortunate in my life that I have traveled to many different countries and have been able to purchase many beautiful pieces of ethnic jewelry. I also use these travels to purchase my supplies. I would say my style is elegantly-ethnic, and every piece is made with love. A woman that bought a piece from me recently said that she could feel my soul in it and that’s how I like it.
